It was kinked up when I first saw it and was around 4ft. Pretty snake

I caught a small (3') ratsnake on our county road last night to show my two young boys in the truck. Spooked me a little bit when it started buzzing its tail against my hand like a rattler.

Yep, that is what they will commonly do. There are a couple other species who will do that as well. I had a ball snake do it to me during my internship in college. At that point, I did not have as much experience as I do now with handling snakes, so it was definitely a surprise

I can't say which was harder to catch. Both of these little guys are quick.

I vote whiptail... spiny lizards are fast but they have too much faith in their camouflage.

True. My spiny lizard had the dumbs. He tried to dive into deep bermuda for cover and stay still, but brown and black camouflage don't work on green grass. Plus he couldn't fool my scotty dog's nose.

First time poster on this thread but I've been watching it closely after my wife and I moved into a new property about a year and a half ago. Just in the last 3 weeks we've seen 2 rat snakes (4'), a yellow bellied racer (6'), and this Desert King Snake.

Snakes always put a good scare into me. I always jump out of my skin when I see them. Working on getting less anxious around them and have come a long way. Found this guy on the back porch yesterday evening. Desert King Snake I think… From a little research looks like a great snake to have around the house.

I bought a snake grabbing tool a few weeks ago so that I can gently move the things away from the house. First time using it yesterday.

That's a beauty and looks like its eating good.

Great Basin spotted by my kid while mapping the Cedar City, UT area on field camp. His partner almost slid down a hill straight into it!

Some variety of garter would be my guess.

Wandering gartersnake. Tell your buddy identifying a venomous snake in Colorado is easy.

Rattle = venomous
No Rattle = nonvenomous

Speaking of…any idea how common rattlesnakes are at 8000 ft elevation here in southwest Colorado? Research tells me they can be found up to 9000 or so but locals say they're very rare up here. We have seen one a little lower down in a canyon while fishing. We've got some pretty rocky cliffs on 2 sides of our property that sure looks like it could be snakey.

Granted it's northwest Co, but similar elev: my friends have been in steamboat springs for 20 years and only seen a rat snake once and maybe a little ribbon or garter grass snake a few times. Hundreds of bears. Zero rattlesnakes.
