I don't know what they're teaching in Boy Scouts but it sounds like good advice given he was able to get himself to the hospital. I think the main thing in that situation you absolutely have to do is stay calm and keep your heart rate low.
I am surprised they're administering antivenin so quickly... normally, or at least the way I was last told, is that they tend to monitor the situation first and then administer it if signs pointed towards it being worth the risk. If I am not mistaken, there are potential issues with anaphylaxis and cardiac arrest with antivenin that can be higher than just riding out bite with antibiotics and steroids. Again, I am not a doctor nor did I stay at Holiday Inn Express last night, that is just what I heard last.

He just texted that he just got antivenom now(I'm assuming there was some pain meds involved earlier)
No significant damage
Swelling has stopped
