How long do you want to ignore this user?
Soft opening this weekend so they had a limited menu. The only place I've seen it is on their Instagram and maaaaaaaybe Rusty's Facebook.

They're getting all that stuff in order. I'm guessing one of my friends being a realtor got into the soft opening. She said they have a Sunday brunch 10:30-3:00, not open for lunch yet, and closed on Mondays.

It is a burden for people like myself who don't have the time to go home after work and get dressed for a dinner. Although my standard attire for work is a polo and jeans, I don't typically feel comfortable when I am the most underdressed person in the restaurant. I like the Republic for that reason. Requiring too extreme of a dress code does nothing but push the demographic that falls between blue and white collar to other restaurants where we feel more comfortable.

For some reason this discussion is making me think of the scene in The Blues Brothers where Jake and Ellwood make spectacles of themselves in the incredibly overblown fancy restaurant where all the diners are in tuxes and evening gowns.

I searched for a VERY long time for good cajun food here in town.


I finally found it.

The Remnant of Nawlins
on Grossbeck Street in Bryan (way off the beaten path)

The higher end restraints probs my run those as specials once the weather changes.

The Republic and Porters usually have Gulf fish on offer. We have no mid-range restaurants that have non Cajun seafood, or much beyond catfish and tilapia. The demand just isn't here. When I want a really good seafood meal I'll go to Houston, or go fishing.

I've had good luck with fish at Republic, but I really gravitate towards steak.

Went to 1860 Italia tonight for a birthday meal.

The salmon Oscar comes with a crme sauce. The dish was tasty but there was so much sauce you couldn't actually see what you were eating.

Meanwhile, the mussels and pasta was supposed to have a sauce but only had a little liquid in the bottom of the dish. The pasta was dry.

The redfish special was good.

Maybe the sauce expert was off tonight.

Last time we got a fish special it was a tuna steak. It had a sauce with it that was beef based. Which is not what you expect with fish.

Maybe don't worry about the sauces and let the good taste of the food stand on its own?

The mention of Houston Hot Chicken opening up reminds me to say that Urban Bird at Jones Crossing is really great. Really good, huge portions, and super consistent. It's without a doubt my favorite chickencentric joint in town.

My only complaint is not enough seating and the middle long table loses lotsa seating by the silly decorative thing they have running across that table.

Went to Taco Casa on the bypass. They had given me a card coupon thing previously with 15 percent off and a free taco, so I got a super taco, a smaller one and a drink for about $5.50.

Good deal, hard to get a lunch that cheap these days.
Trump will fix it.

Don't worry. Tomorrow am might tell. I guess my point would be that everyone - $ to $$$$ establishments - are responsible to meet the same standards. When I see a $$$ or more institution not meeting standards that $ establishments meet I'm disturbed. My dad was a food safety exec for a fortune 50 firm from the late 60s till the early 2000s. It requires work but isn't rocket science. Just commitment and integrity.

Not bashing C&J, just noting the sad milestone that my usual order, a brisket plate and regular fountain drink, now breaks the $20 barrier ($20.03 total w/ tax).

It's around $16 on Mondays when brisket is the lunch special and the fountain drink is included, so there's that.

I feel like "The Rent Is Too Damn High" guy, but for BBQ
