Red's Ice House on century square.

Feels like a sports bar, priced like Christopher's.

Tiny menu and the cheapest option is a $15 salad without a protein.

$18 burgers when Hopdoddy is 100 feet away?

This place will go out of business before the football season brings in people willing to pay those prices.

I'd rather go to Anchor Bar for the reason you wanted to go to Pluckers! I like it quieter! :-D Wings are great and the pizza rolls are amazing!

Agree 100% on Taco Bar. Great food and amazing owner! I wish he'd advertise a little because the location is a little rough.

The varsity owners are in that building and land for way more than they ever should have been. No one is going to come along and fork over 5+ million to open another restaurant in no man's land on Highway 6
It amazing that people will spend hundreds of thousands of dollar to open a restaurant and then, one, not do their due diligence on site selection, and two, not hire a competent and experienced manager.

We went there twice. The first time was about a month after they opened with eight persons and it was busy and we waited about 10 minutes to get noticed and about 40 minutes to get our food and two or three orders were wrong. We thought it was a little overpriced for what we got, but I can live with that.

The second time was my wife and I and it was not full at all and it took 10 minutes again to get noticed and after we got our food, which was fine, our waiter stood in the far corner talking to a gal on a computer and I had to wave him down twice for help.

Never went again.

I'm pretty sure construction alone, not including the property itself, was north of $3mil.

To add some positivity and a question:

Original C&J's on Harvey and the Wings N More Express on 21 have become two of my favorites in recent years. Both always very good. Wings N More operates as efficiently as Chik Fil A at peak times.

And for the question, any word of Casa Mangiare lately? I haven't heard much about it since it opened. I typically only drive by there at lunch time so can't gauge the crowd.

We LOVE Taco Crave!!

Unfortunately the way the economy is going, it's tough for people to get out and pay these prices regularly. As a results, it has to be getting tougher for these places to keep lights on.

Also, couple that with the fact we are saturated with chicken and Mexican food places, it gets a bit boring after a while. I'm sure the Bubba's 33 will probably do just fine since it is something different and offers more variety, but it is an interesting location. But only time will tell.

Went to La Bodega yesterday and was thoroughly disappointed. We went after church and it was not busy at all. Service was very slow and the food quality was not great. I was really excited to see the poblano soup and it was so salty it was inedible.

Not sure we will be back, especially at those prices. $5.50 - $6.50 for a taco and and extra $5.00 to add rice and beans.

Please email me at costa@eccellgroup.com so that I can learn more about the details of your experience and hopefully earn your business back.

Thank you

I went to a Bubba 33s last year in Brownsville. Hamburger I had was great. Daughter had fried fish, it was some of the best restaurant fried fish I have eaten. Hope they are the same here.

An idea for this thread - post the name of the restaurant and post your review. Anyone else wanting to address that restaurant can quote and then add their thoughts, that way not all mixed up.

My BIL was the original MP/Area GM for Bubba's 33 when he was at TxRH in Fayetteville. He worked directly with Kent Taylor in building the concept/menu. That place will do well no matter the location. Just the way they operate like TxRH, makes it sustainable.

Moral of the story. Work in a restaurant for two years before you open a new restaurant. It is nothing but hard work and the failure rate is high.

Madden's is supposedly coming back and my wife and I couldn't be more excited.

Wish it had never left (or that Chef Tai wouldn't have abandoned it).

The concession stand at Wayne Smith ball park has some of the best commercial chili on their hot dogs I have ever tasted. Brisket flavor is strong.

I went for the first time on Saturday during a donut run (10.5 miles, 3 donut shops) and tried the cronut holes. So good. My husband had a brisket kolache. I want to go back to try more items!

Went to Casa Rod last Saturday at about 5:15. Heard someone else bought it so my wife and I thought we would try it as we really loved the food a year or two ago.

Walked in and there was not another customer in the room. I asked the young host for a booth, He looked around and said that they were all dirty and when I looked they all had dirty dishes. There was another guy sititng in far back table and two gals standing just outside the kitchen doors.

So we sat at a table against the wall and he handed us menus. After about two or three minutes he came back with water. We sat there about five minutes and my wife was sitting looking towards the back of the restaurant and the two gals were just standing and talking. The guy that brought us the water had sat back down on the back table with the other guy.

Another couple came in and was sat about two tables in front of us. Still no acknowledgement of us. We waited another couple of minutes and I told my wife I will wait another minute and I am gone. We did and I stood up and looked back and the two guys were still sitting at the table and the two gals were still standing and talking.

I just waved and said bye to them and walked towards the door and stopped a second and told the other couple good luck as they had yet to get anything other than menus.

I hope they make it, but if this is typical of their new service and employee attitude, they will be closed within months.

We went to Jose's and the waitstaff was great, chips and drinks within minutes, and food delivered within about six or seven minutes.

That sounds exactly how it was under the previous owners. Rumor is it's another family member so who knows how much it will actually change.

Same. We eat downtown almost once a week and we haven't been there since we moved back.

I had one of the half price Thursdays coupon, so we could both eat on about $25. Used use them all the time.

You have to try Kott's in Anderson. Went to grand opening on Saturday. Great breakfast. Country cooking. New owners had a BBQ place in Tomball. Brought a few of their BBQ items to the menu. Try the Bexar Burger if you are there for lunch. They also have daily lunch specials. Owners are Aggies and are great people.

Went to Blue Fin for lunch today around 11:45 AM. Noticed immediately that things were different. No other guests were there & didn't recognize any of the old staff. No sushi chefs were wearing hair restraints. Menu came out and prices had increased dramatically.
Me & my friend ordered 2 "moderately" priced rolls each with a water & 1 tea and the price was $52 before the tip!

Over twice as expensive as what I've paid before.

No lunch specials either. No bento box.

Rolls came out on a lazy susan and it was hard to grab a piece of sushi without the table rolling away from you. No plates served with the rolls, either. Rolls were bland.

This place will be out of business very soon, IMO. Sad because it used to be my favorite sushi place.

I hope this thread doesn't just turn into a place to s*** on local restaurants.
It's "Local Restaurant Review / Discussion", what's wrong with criticizing local restaurants? I mean, as long as you're not wishing death upon the owners or making comments implying something unsavory and potentially libelous ("Ever since [___] opened, all the stray cats from the neighborhood started disappearing", e.g.), I don't think it's wrong to criticize food quality/service/etc. more than anywhere else.

Well, Yelp kind of exists for this. And it's slowly recovering since the departure of The Oracle.

Just post like you are in a discussion with your spouse. Lead with things like "my experience " or " I felt" not "everyone " " people always" " no one should" and it will be a great thread !

No because:
1) you can fire back at someone who clearly is BSing (which you couldn't do at Yelp) or otherwise has an agenda
2) there's no dopamine hit for being "first to review" and general larping as a food reviewer
3) nothing you say here can affect the actual star rating on any mainstream platform, it's just discussion

Casa Rod used to be one of my favorite places in town. We'd go there probably weekly when I was in college (c/o 2014), I would take my family there when they would come to visit, and it was one of my go-to places to take dates because it was good, fun, and inexpensive.

But your summary above sounds like every experience I've had there when we decide to give it a shot every few years. I want it to do well. The owner (or at least who I understand to be the owner) is active on the BCS Meal Deals FB page, and I believe I've even seen their ads here on TexAgs. So it's like she's making an effort, but is either blind to or simply unwilling/unable to address the service and quality issues that everyone reports.

I honestly don't know how it's still open. I hope they're able to make adjustments and return to what they used to be, but I'm afraid their days are numbered.

Seems like she sold it to a family member. She's still going the social media though. She's real active on Facebook but it seems way less so I'm the restaurant.
