I'm probably about to get run off TexAgs, but I've never thought the burgers at the Chicken or Chicken Oil are anything special. While the Chicken is a special place to me, it's probably my third or fourth choice for a burger in town.

Yeah. It's more the name and "ambience" and memories of college days for most people, but the burgers have always just been ok for me.

Here comes the Chicken Oil backlash less than 2 days after they re-opened!

Parts of backlash pending:
1. Kinda expensive for this town.
2. Too far from the bypass!
3. No free soda refills.
4. Portion sizes too small!

I eat the CFS sandwich at both places.

What I really miss are the flautas that the chicken used to have.

Less expensive than last week at the chicken

All the free refills
We ended up with enough fries for a small village

Good burgers and a nice vibe. They and the Cow Hope were Northgate icons.

I chose to skip the Chicken Oil Co for another week, while I let things inevitably settle down. Instead I treated Ms. Dustoff00 and myself to a good ol' greasy burger from TOTH... And pretty sure I made the correct choice with a Double Hot and Cheesy combo with a Boots Dewberry soda. Still think this is the best burger in/slightly outside of town...

Had Martin's for lunch. Fed all 4 of us for under $40 and had great service. Just more evidence that they just don't like tu ag.

If you drank Boots, you didn't make the right choice.

Glad to see TOTH still going strong. Little Vic still working there?

They are great. Mine were gone first, but the left overs on the Mrs. Dustoff00 plate at the end of lunch were still crisp and better than most others that come out fresh...

The TOTH experience/burger is great on a Saturday afternoon. I don't remember the fries but seeing that pic I guess they're frozen?

Not sure if they are frozen, but I am sure they are delicious, HOT, and crispy.

Edit: As you can see in my top pic, they were gone before I even started on the burger.

Date night this week … all these Madden and Marfa Texas Kitchen posts have me wanting to try one of them.

Which one would be yalls choice?

Marfa specifically for the pistachio chicken fried steak with jalapeño gravy and the "lite ya up" calamari. The cocktails are solid too.

Marfa it was! Got the Fried Green Tomatoes and Fig and Goat as appetizers, along with an old fashioned and Marfa Lights cocktail to start. I had the 10 oz sirloin and fries and the gf got the "famous" chicken fried steak.

Service was great, appetizers were delicious and perfectly portioned for 2. The fried green tomatoes came on a bed of grits with little sausage pieces that was heavenly, and the sauce on top was spicy but not over the top. Balanced the heat from that with the goat cheese and fig preserve spread and crackers .... apps stole the show.

My steak was cooked a perfect medium rare, fries very similar to freddy's, good seasoned ketchup. CFS was a good size, and was pretty good, but I will say the gravy was very much so just white gravy with grilled jalapeno on top. We both felt like it needed a little more seasoning or spice to set it apart from every other CFS around. Not bad by any means, but after the delicious appetizers, we weren't wowed by the CFS.

Drinks were solid. Seating/lighting/noise level were fine. Total bill just below $100 before tip, so not too high but not an every day type of place. Will def be back for lunch, more date nights, and possibly just to grab a drink at the bar.

Thanks for the recommendation, and I for sure will recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried as well!

You are promoting one bad after another.

They have more burger options at lunch. The Lindsey Lou is my pick of the burgers. Very good.

I had their Halibut catch of the day last time and it was awesome!

Their Lavender haze drink is pretty cool also.

Torches was good when you could get one of their margaritas at a reasonable price but once they jacked up the price, I have never been back bc other places tacos are better.
FlyRod
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Agreed. I like Torchy's a lot, but lots of local taquerias get the job done well. Mi Tierra is my go to at the moment.

Mostly I'm impressed with their ability to succeed in that space where so many restaurants crashed and burned previously.

I loved Torchy's when they were still in a trailer way back when I worked at brack. They would take orders for several units at once and when they slowed down after lunch, they would make all of ours and deliver.
