So is she the favorite to be our new ace?

No, she's a closer. Sid & Syd are the ace(s). I suspect Pannell fills a role like Leavitt did for us this year but from the left side.

I figured Lessentine was the clear favorite for the role until I kept seeing comments about needing an elite pitcher from the portal. That trio looks really good on paper if Peters can stay healthy.

There is a Tennessee player with the same name and similar looks. I've been so confused why I was seeing hitting stats instead of pitching stats while trying to look at her numbers

I'm excited for this pickup. She gave us absolute fits when we played Missouri this season.

That brings the roster to 25

Someone who likes reading legalese more than me can answer if we have to stop there. My understanding is that we can designate players who don't count against the cap so they can stay on the team and on scholarship but not count toward the 25.

So maybe we are done. And maybe not

Thank you for the link!
This is a big addition for Coach Ford &co. I like the addition of Pannell to our bullpen and think she can really complement our staff well. Although a typical closer she started in the lone game she pitched in against us in 2025. She pitched 8.1 innings, gave up 4 runs on 8 hits, 5 walks and 3Ks. Watching that game I remember wishing thinking she was good, so glad to have her on our side now.

Can designate current players as non-counters. However, AD has announced fully funding all spots, so maybe we don't want to exceed the roster limit, with each additional spot costing about $50k/year. And I think it would be hard to allow softball to go over without allowing other sports to go over. Track and Field and Swim/Dive a both taking significant hits to their roster.

Prediction for 2 of 4 commitments:

Talon Edward's from OK State- solid pickup with great glove

Maya Johnson from Belmont- led D1 in strikeouts in 2025 and would be a grad transfer. Solid left with good speed and unhittable changeup. Think Kelly Maxwell/Giselle Juarez type of spin/speed/movement. Really Excited about this one if it holds up.

TF just followed talon and maya on twitter/x the past few days. Hopefully this is true!!

So if you had for example 4 players you wished to grandfather who were currently each on 25% scholarships and by grandfathering you chose to keep those players at their current scholarship level. The you could have 24 on full and those 4 on 25% and have 28 players and stay in budget.

This is a complete hypothetical. I have no idea how much any player gets in scholarships or how they will handle things going forward but I don't think it is as straightforward as if you are on the team already you had to get bumped to a full scholarship. They could certainly choose to do that if it was best for the team but I don't see a mandate for that.

We are in some uncharted territory and being flexible seems smart

Thanks for the info and scenario. Roster "construction" will be as much "art" as it is "science". Assuming NIL will play a role in "catchup" for a player's "compensation package".

I may be completely off base here. Just a hypothetical in my mind. Seems possible but there could be locker room issues having 24 on a full ride and 4 on partial. On the other side these players may like being at A&M and came here knowing that were getting whatever they were getting and would rather be here at that rate than a lesser school at a higher rate. Lots to consider if you do it but worth at least thinking about. I also think 28 is 2 many. Just a thought exercise while I wait impatiently to find out the next 3 players

Agree. Not knowing their respective situation in 2025, scholarship or NIL, if you could receive double (1/8 to 1/4 or 1/4 to 1/2, 1/2 to 1) one would be in a better situation.

I'm sure Trisha & the Staff had these conversations, with each player, as a team, and internal to the staff. Because we only had 3 go into the portal, indicates they had to. The leaders in the locker room will have to step forward and be just that "leaders" so things don't fester in the locker room and the boat is rowed in one direction.

There is always movement on baseball rosters in the fall. Does this also happen in softball?

We added 2 players from Oklahoma St. today. Both have one year left to play.

2025 stats:

Util Tallen Edwards .282, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 4 steals
IF Micaela Wark .241 Avg, 8 HR, 18 RBI, 0 steals

Gap

The other two added earlier this week with 2025 stats noted:

Oklahoma's OF Maya Bland (2 years left to play)
.250 avg, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 3 steals in 32 at bats

Missouri's P Taylor Pannell (1 year left to play)
overall: 5 wins, 9 losses, 3 saves, 3.33 ERA, .254 BAA
SEC only: 0 wins, 7 losses, 3 saves, 4.44 ERA, .272 BAA

Of the 4 additions so far, I think Bland from Oklahoma has the opportunity to be the biggest contributor.

Seems like we've done pretty well in the portal so far, curious to see how Coach puts all the pieces together. Would love to add another experienced arm to the circle.

Let's play Coach (Yes, I'm a numbers nerd and pretty excited about Aggie softball)

2025 Line up looked like this
  • Catcher Mac Barbara
  • 1st Amari Harper
  • 2nd KK Dement
  • SS Koko Wooley
  • 3rd Kennedy Powell
  • LF Kramer Eschette
  • CF Allie Enright
  • RF Kelsey Mathis
  • DP Mya Perez

That line had a BA @ 0.361, OBP @ 0.459, SLG @ 0.713, OPS @ 1.172

2026 Like up (using 2025 numbers unless otherwise noted)
  • Catcher Ariel Kowalewski (2024 Stats)
  • 1st Micaela Wark
  • 2nd Kennedy Powell
  • SS KK Dement
  • 3rd Tallen Edwards
  • LF Maya Bland
  • CF Kelsey Mathis
  • RF Frankie Vrazel
  • DP Mya Perez

This line projects at BA @ 0.327, OBP @ 0.425, SLG @ 0.663, OPS @ 1.087

If Micaela & Tallen return to their top form and Maya gets a full season (only 32 total AB's in 25) under her belt, the numbers will meet or exceed this year's offense. Mya & KK are coming off great years and will only get better. Could go on and on. Don't think I need to convince anyone here that Coach & Staff are moving us forward and not taking a back seat to anyone.

I'm sure the Coach & Staff have combed over the House Settlement and are constructing the roster to make a push to a Conference Title and onto OKC.

*EDIT IN BOLD (calc'd the BA wrong, thanks to DosAgs for pointing it out)

The only potential improvement that I see there is in the outfield.

The Oklahoma St, players who batted .241 and .282 are a pretty big downgrade from Amari and Koko.

I think our hitting coach will increase those averages. All of OSU batting averages dropped this year.

Agree! Jeff had to see something that he could correct and get them back to or better form. I have faith in the staff.
