You cant stop the actual kicking the ball motion. The run up is separate.

My argument, as someone formerly licensed as a referee, is that it's dumb for a player whose feet are in a set position behind a defender to be called offside because he leaned forward.

As a former defender that played at a high level, I think its dumb the offensive player facing the goal and defense can't stay on sides. We played with our back to the goal. Strikers already have a step as we have to react, flip our hips, and get back into position.
