Since yall probably arent watching the draft: Ace Bailey refused to work out for Utah and told them not to draft him.

Utah drafted him anyway.

I don't speak 'gram, but my guess is KD is pissed off at somebody and is going to be just petty enough to be entertaining to watch in Houston.

Yeah. Bailey didn't work out for any team. He was hoping teams would pass on him because he probably had a team down thw draft he wanted to go to. Backfired big time for him.

He was trying to force his way to Washington at 6 or Brooklyn at 8.

Not watching it, but following online. Wild draft so far.

Coward would have been there had we held the pick and I bet we would have drafted him.

I'm sure GS is over the moon at getting Bryant with their second pick.

Essengue, Beringer and Yang all shot up the board. Everyone looking for the next international star. Brooklyn took Demin and Traore... two guys that play the same position and can't shoot well (yet)...That seems like poor draft strategy.

Yeah, Beyond thrilled with Bryant. Seems like a really fantastic kid in addition to being a nice prospect. He will need some time to develop. My comparison for him has been Trey Murphy.

The Yang thing is really really weird. So is Demin and Traore.

Brooklyn must have a drunk monkey at wheel right now...3 euro guards that all do the same thing!

And then a point center/forward...I wonder if they know basketball is played with only a single ball?

It's like they let a simulator auto draft based on their player rankings.

I've had a theory that KD has had a me vs the NBA mindset ever since he arrived in OKC. Durant has been in the NBA long enough to have been drafted by the Supersonics. I think he was happy in Seattle and wasn't keen on moving even if the wheels were in motion before he got drafted. I think they were sold to Clay Bennett the year before Durant was drafted. I don't think he had good faith negotiations with Seattle when they were supposedly looking for funding a new arena after his purchase. His plan was always to move the team to OKC, which is his right as the owner, I don't begrudge him for that but I think Durant has had an axe to grind with the entire league since then. Similar to when Stan Kroenke became a partial and then full owner of the Rams, he never intended to keep the team in STL, he always planned on moving to LA. It actually makes me appreciate Durant a bit more, I like a player with a me vs the league mindset.

Feels like FVV signing that extension means Stone already has something tangible close at hand, which also doesn't include him being traded to another team because of the discount.

It is clear that despite his diminished effectiveness, FVV is the leader and soul of that team. Udoka brought him in to be the leader and he has shown to be fantastic in that role. I don't think they ever wanted to trade him.

When you get drafted by the 2nd team in the West, but they trade you to Phoenix.

I was laughing so hard when they made this pick. I tuned in to Matt Thomas to hear his draft thoughts yesterday around lunch time. A caller was dead serious and wanted the Rockets to trade Alpy and a future 1st to buy back into the draft to take Maluach. Matt and the gang tore him up pretty good for being a dumba**. When they picked him for Phoenix I just knew that caller was somewhere losing his sh**

Also, on a separate note, I think its time to eliminate draft hats altogether. It is ridiculous watching a guy get his name called and giving him a hat from a team he will never play for.
Guitarsoup

If we know the trade has been made and it just can't go through for a week due to league rules, let them wear the right hat. It's so stupid to make Maluach wear a Rockets cap. And they have done this forever. Kawhi wore a Pacers hat when the Spurs drafted him. Just makes no sense and it sucks for the players and fans.

I really am clueless when it comes to NBA draft and contracts. WTF is a poison pill?

If you sign a contract extension that goes up too much for the following year (usually a rookie extension) then for trade purposes it is really weird.

You have to match salaries to a certain level based on where you stand in the Cap. 1st apron and higher teams can't take back more than they send out. Under the cap teams can take back more than they send out and use cap space (like Spurs getting Harrison Barnes for nothing last year and accepting him into their cap space.)

So when Green's contract for this year is 10M and his contract for next year is 30M, they take the average of the two for incoming salary but they would count the old salary as the outgoing salary for matching purposes. There is a huge disparity there so it makes it harder for teams to make deals when the contract goes way up the following year.

The poison pill was initially made famous by Darryl Morey when he was our GM. He signed Lin and Asik, who we were trying to lure as restricted free agents, to contracts that greatly escalated. This kept their original teams from matching the salary due to future cap limitations, thus termed the poison pill.

The strategy would eventually bite him in the ass when he couldn't really trade either guy down the road because of the size of their contracts.

Different thing entirely and those contracts aren't allowed anymore. Lin and Asik both got 3y deals with a ballon year in the 3rd year.

The way those deals were structured to be 5M, 5M, and 15M for the three years, but would count as the average of 8.33M per year for the Rockets, but if the Knicks had matched Lin's deal, it would have counted as the actual price of 5M, 5M, and 15M and the Knicks had big extensions hitting on Amare and Melo. So they couldn't afford the luxury tax hit on that 15M year at the end and they let Lin go.

Completely different than the poison pill situation on Jalen Green's extension, which is pretty common for rookie extensions. The Poison Pill deal is to keep teams from matching salary on a rookie level deal with an extension already in place then have that massive jump the following year.

I should have clarified, the term "poison pill" was made famous by Darryl Morey.

I actually think the current usage of the term is inappropriate. Its not really a poison pill, but rather a hurdle.

You either bypass the trade hurdle and complete the deal or you dont. A true poison pill is one that is not hard to obtain (just swallow), but kills you later. The Knicks could have held onto Lin, but realized the pill would eventually kill them. In the current case, teams just have to find matching salaries to complete the deal, nothing will "kill" them later.
Guitarsoup

When Morey did those two weird contracts, the term poison pill was already in common usage for the NBA rules on salary matching on extensions of like Green's.

It is just using the same term for two different things. But since the NBA closed that loophole that Morey used, no one really talks about it anymore. So usage of poison pill is pretty much exclusively used for the extension trade restrictions that have been in effect since the 99 CBA or so.

I get what you are saying, it does seem more apt to talk about the Morey contracts like that, but since they aren't legal anymore, they are more of a one time oddity.
AG@RICE

I wish they would use a more appropriate term.

Darryls poison pill was aptly named.

For this situation, I propose "Fat Bomb": Something that is currently skinny, but you can see that it will gain immense weight the moment you commit to it. In a moment of desperation you take it anyways.

Jalen Green's deal was definitely a Fat Bomb.

He said he only wanted to play for the Wizards or Nets and apparently told the Jazz not to take him because he wouldn't show up.

I know the Spurs flew their first round picks into SA yesterday. Bailey isn't in Utah yet.

Based on his actions and comments, it is clear he is a few fries short of a Happy Meal.

Him dropping from 3rd to 5th cost him $9M in guaranteed money. If he had dropped to 8 for the Nets, it would have been almost $20M in guaranteed money.

Zero chance Utah would do that unless we threw in 2027 PHX unprotected + better player (Eason/Reed/Jabari).
