Chas is a legend in my books for the catch, his big homerun off of Chapman, and the HR against Cole after the Yankees dropped the fly ball

Dusty ruined Chas. He earned the CF spot in '22, then Dusty doesn't start him until game three of the following season. I seem to recall that we wore the gold WS jerseys the first two games, neither of which Chas started in. That was pretty crappy if you ask me.
Chas ruined Chas… come on.

This means that by virtue of being at the Astros/Indians game that one night that he debuted, I saw 1/3 of Kenedy Corona's all-time games as an Astro.

Ironically enough, that was when Dusty was really riding him hard and there seems to be a lot of tension. It was prime "big puddin'" time.

Almost like he worked better when he felt he had to prove himself than he did when he was playing for a good friend?

I think anyone giving Dusty credit for Chas is rewriting history.

I wasn't giving him credit, I was saying Chas probably played better with a chip on his shoulder because he was pissed at how Dusty was using or not using him. I don't think it was some grand plan by Dusty, it was just Dusty being Dusty. I don't think he really got much of a chance to prove anything to Espada last year and he was hurt for a lot of 2024.

Chas was Chazzy Fizz when he was driving balls oppo. His closed stance forced him to hit oppo. Most of the last 2 seasons he was very closed in his stance and trying to pull everything. Short of Stanton that mostly doesn't work.

He totally forgot what he was good at.

Recency bias on both Chaz and Yanier suggest Dusty knew what he was doing in using them both as part-time players in '23.

Yeah - pretty sure I mentioned a while back that he was a legitimate possibility.

I don't think it's a done deal but there's probably a greater than 50/50 chance. It wouldn't cost anything and Justin and Kate love it here.

The above is mostly true. Chas was sort of the type that marches to the beat of his own drum and it really rubbed some dudes the wrong way.. Dusty included.

He wasn't a bad guy by any means. Just a really different cat.

I miss Yuli. Low key one of my favorite Astros of all time.

Same...my favorite call from either of our World Series wins is "GURRIELLLL...has...TIED IT!"

I hate Joe Buck but I could listen to that call for hours straight and the fact that it was off Kershaw was just the cream on top.

Throw an incentive laden contract at him and hes your cheap 3/4 starter. Maybe you catch lightning in a bottle.

His W/L was awful, but his metrics were better than that. A 3.85 ERA and 3.85 FIP, 29 starts and 152 IP.

If he wants to come here to end his career wearing an Astros cap instead of a Tigers one, sign him up.

That is because W/L metrics are terrible stats.

But 3.85 ERA and 3.85 FIP may be a little off, too. It's a mixed bag. His batted ball metrics continued to decline last year. But he was able to recover some swing and miss and strike outs that he had previously lost.

I haven't looked into splits yet, but I would wager JV's #s are much better at home in Oracle. That is one of the worst hitters' parks. We know JV can give up the long ball. Oracle is 18% below average in HR. Only PNC is lower.

I wouldn't hate JV as another body in the rotation, but he'd be the #5. We can't go into a season and expect 42 (43?) year old JV to be a consistent #3.

2026 Rotation
1. Brown
2. --new trade piece--
3/4. Javier, Arrighetti, Alexander
5. whoever loses out on the 3/4 battle, McCullers, Verlander, Blubaugh, Ullola, France

We should have enough bodies to throw at the rotation. Hopefully, 5 stick.

I wouldn't hate it, but I think the rumors show another direction. They want to trade for a cheaper arm. Ranger is projected to get something like 6/151 (per spotrac).

I don't want to get in a bidding war over him. He's gonna be 43, and we don't have much room to the luxury tax. If you take the name off the back of the jersey, we could find someone to give innings and equivalent production at his current age for not a huge contract.

Yeah, they were trying to go into sign an aging Bregman last offseason, yet won't sign the reigning Cy Young winner long term. It doesn't make sense.

Countdown to spring training: 96 days

It was a lovely spring day in May 1996 when the Astros visited the Expos . Montreal was off to a 26-12 start while the Astros were stumbling along at 18-20. A matchup between Mike Hampton and Ugeth Urbina was on deck for the 19,345 fans at Stade Olympique.

With a Sunday getaway game, Terry Collins gave Tony Eusebio the day off to let 32-year-old Jerry Goff start at catcher. Goff allowed two passed balls in the first inning. Most people didn't really notice because the Astros also had a Hampton wild pitch, a Biggio error, and a pop fly double that nobody felt like catching in falling behind 3-0.

The Expos scored 2 more runs in the top of the second, prompting Collins to say, well we're going to lose, so let's bring in the biggest loser of all time, Anthony Young.

Trailing 5-2 in the third the Expos had runners on first and second with 2 outs in the third and Urbina at the plate when Goff had passed balls on consecutive pitches to score another run and give hi m4 PB for the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, Goff tied the MLB record for passed balls in a game with 2 more on consecutive pitches from Jeff Tabaka to Moises, scoring yet another run.

Goff was cut the next day, and never played again.

Woo, Miller, and Seattle's best 3 prospects (at least 2 hitters) in minors. Anything less than that and no way Detroit deals him to the team that knocked them out of the playoffs.
