I'll save the thread with my lame pics from the past two days. Nothing special except for a stupid frog that kept jumping into my leg when I was standing still

So our son(22 yo) is up in Salida, CO fishing on the Arkansas River. He just called & said "Hey Dad, you remember the Boy Scout training we got about what to do when bit by a snake, I got to use it..." A rattlesnake got him on the ankle.

He drove himself to the hospital, 12 minutes away, and has had one dose of anti-venom and says the Dr.'s say it is not bad....

So serious question for the experts, what should we expect?

I am assuming the ankle may be a better spot than say the back of your calf...

ETA I'm still waiting on the pics he promised....

Whoa! Hope he is alright!

I don't know what they're teaching in Boy Scouts but it sounds like good advice given he was able to get himself to the hospital. I think the main thing in that situation you absolutely have to do is stay calm and keep your heart rate low.

I am surprised they're administering antivenin so quickly... normally, or at least the way I was last told, is that they tend to monitor the situation first and then administer it if signs pointed towards it being worth the risk. If I am not mistaken, there are potential issues with anaphylaxis and cardiac arrest with antivenin that can be higher than just riding out bite with antibiotics and steroids. Again, I am not a doctor nor did I stay at Holiday Inn Express last night, that is just what I heard last.

BadAce would be a perfect person to respond to this question since he is an MD.

A strike for defense versus food may be different. The rattlesnake may have injected very little venom. That is my understanding but please correct me if wrong.

Had a friend that got struck on the hand by a rattlesnake while pulling weeds in his yard on the west side of Denver. He went into anaphylaxis and had to be lifeflighted to the hospital and got an emergency tracheotomy in the chopper.

Funny you say that.

He told me he was kinda grateful it was him that got bit. He had met an older couple that was there fishing as well, and the older gentleman was showing him some tips and sharing advice. The old fisherman gave up his spot to give my son a better spot to cast from.

My son said it was probably better it got him than his new 81 year old friend........

Yeah, he was fine after a few weeks. They had to be very careful with the treatment on him not to reaggravate the reaction but he was out of immediate danger as soon as they did the tracheotomy.

Had a friend who got tagged about 20 years ago in the middle finger. Course, he was picking reptile mites off of a rattle snake, which was pretty stupid (even though he had experience handling hot snakes). 15 vials of antivenin later…..

Lucky he didn't lose his middle finger. Course, he was flipping people off for a couple of months due…
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

I feel like after being on the receiving end of a rattlesnake bite we should get a members only type jacket or something.

I'm glad your boy is hanging in there, the potential nerve damage and the swelling was the scariest part for me. All and all not a great experience, but no lasting damage, and I hope the same for your boy.

ETA: Op, we always hear crazy stories about how expensive antivenom is. If your boy doesn't mind, would you mind sharing when the time comes? I didn't receive any.

I'm in a snakebite group and those doctors are VERY anti steroid and antibiotic (and also surgery) for snakebites.

As I stated in my post, I'm not a doctor. The point being was they normally don't just treat with antivenin first. I'm not on Facebook so I'm not on the snake ID stuff, which I presume you're getting this from? Dr Greene?
