Just encountered this one while walking our Aussie. Maybe 3.5' long.

It didn't let me get a profile pic but the look it did allow made me think it did not have the mascara of a cottonmouth.

PBWS?

Several water snakes today but they were too quick for me to get pictures of them. Just got this small one on the walk.

Dog also started pawing at some high grass, thought it found a small rabbit or a frog. Dumb dog found a dried piece of pizza in the middle of nowhere by a pond.

This rat snake shook the tip of its tail very quickly when I got close to it. I didn't know they did that.

Yeah, it is a common feature of rat snakes, corn snakes, and other snakes. It is thought that when they do this in leaf litter, it sounds like a rattle snake. Some of my captive corn snakes would do it when they were very young. They grew out of it. Some wild corn and rat snakes will do it occasionally.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

One of our cats either brought in or found a Texas Brown in our laundry room a few years ago. I kept hearing this kind of buzzing noise and thought it was the cat playing with a toy around the laundry room door and the hinge creaking with the slight movement of the door. Turned out it was the snake hiding behind the door and rattling his tail against the door every time the cat would stick a paw under the door trying to get to it.

Ribbon snake but I'm not certain if western or some other kind. He was very yellow and about 3 foot long.

Just killed copperhead #3 at the new place. This one was under the trash can, and I just barely saw movement when I started to roll it out.

My wife is currently looking for cats and/or guineas.

What do you think he found in the valve box that was interesting? Or maybe he's been hanging out with ostriches?

I don't usually kill snakes but my daughter stepped on this guy yesterday while we were picking dewberries. Didn't bite her but we are planning on picking more in that area until the season is over. I've been working hard on teaching my girls not to freak out every time they see a snake or spider but I think this set us back.

Is that one or two Copperheads?

How about a two-headed California King Snake? Pretty cool that it appears to be one that could survive long term.

We had a somewhat active weekend at the lease last weekend… I had a coachwhip catch me off guard at the front gate, so it had me on my toes the rest of the weekend. Luckily, these two cotton mouths greeted us in the middle of the road and not out in the brush during our turkey hunts. Throw in a bonus scorpion inside our Polaris trailer for more fun! Our lease is 20 mins south of Victoria on Hwy 77.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that first one does not appear to be a moccasin. I can see the eyes without the typical scale "hood" and no mascara. Plus the white belly, but I will let others chime in and confirm.

It's a cottonmouth.

Sidebar, I really don't understand going out of your way to kill something in an area like that. If you're 20 miles south of Victoria you're in prime open habitat. You're not really protecting anything or anyone. Easier to just keep going on your way. I really don't understand it. In your backyard? Have at it.

understand the sentiment.. but if they're about to go squat in the brush for some turkey hunting with the kids and they see a cottonmouth on the way to the spot, I can understand that sentiment too.

This is exactly our situation… we have kids, cows, dogs, and we're sitting on the ground turkey hunting this same sendero. I'm not interested in the humans or animals getting struck by either one of these snakes.

That's about as cottonmouth-y as cottonmouths get. You can see the eye because the head is turned to the side. The belly is not white, it has a very defined pattern. The pattern on the body is cottonmouth all day long.

Maybe we can all agree to just not post pictures of snakes we offed. This of course doesn't apply to hogs, deer or any game animal for that matter.

Killing things you ain't going to eat isn't the coolest.

I've had two decent encounters in the last week but only have pics of one. I just caught my first Eastern/Yellow rat snake here at Disneyworld. Little guy (2.5' or so) was climbing up the stairs for the slide and I had to go relocate him. Lifeguards and everyone were freaking out and looked at me like I was crazy when I just snagged him and walked off. Sometimes I forgot that's not normal for most people…

Also caught this guy in San Antonio

Thanks.
in his defense, he's a great judge of character...But if you're not family and crawl or have wings or 4 legs & live outside his fence.....
