Nonvenomous western ribbon snake (thamnophis proximus).
Lots of water snakes today, probably saw 10-15 but they were quick. Only got poor pictures of dos

Let's more snakes today but most jetted to deeper water as soon as we got close. Also found some skinks while mowing

Rat or Hognose?
They were about 2 feet from each other, scattered when I was edging which is when I saw the red head
Looks like rat to me. Why would you consider hognose? PS: I've had lots of drinks.

Both of those snakes were easier for me to find than the previous picture you posted. I am not sure I found one on the branches earlier.

Agree! We don't have many rattlesnakes but we have quite a few indigos. They earn their keep!
Guess what? More water snakes! A decent sized one that didn't hide very well. Saw 8 but only got decent pics of the 2

Think he was trying to figure a way up to a bird nest. We had a chat, he hid up under the engine of my DR trimmer for a bit somehow, and then he went on his way.

This and one of my collies had a sharp disagreement in my backyard: I think based on the keeled scales and pattern it is a water snake but can't see the head well in this pic from the wife..,

Maybe. I'd honestly lean hog nose based on the faint pattern I can make out beneath the blood. Not sure though…

It's not a hognose. Tail is wrong.
Male hognoses have longer tails, but not that long. And their tail from their vent is markedly skinnier than their body. Females have short tails.
That tail screams water snake.
