Least skittish water snake I've come across in a while. Didn't seem to mind humans too much but slithered away when it saw my dog which can care less about snakes

We came home to this scene in my driveway the other day. I think the victim is a yellow bellied racer, but not sure on the aggressor... some kind of king snake?

For perspective, the yellow bellied is about 3 ft long and the other is longer.

Yes, they can. Just think of the pythons in Florida eating the alligators. Some snakes can eat snakes slightly longer than themselves.

I couldn't really tell if it was a wound or just some bleeding/trauma out of its ass end from being murdered.

This one ended up dropping and leaving its meal. I came back to mow about and hour later and the coachwhip (apparently) had left the scene.

Yeah I didn't know if the victim got sliced by a lawnmower and that made him easy prey or if it was just pressure on him from being swallowed whole.

There's an eyelash viper from CR today. Pic is kinda ****ty because phong. Couldn't get the monocular in front of the camera right to get a better pic. He was probably 10-12' up or so, and I would've fallen way down the slope if I worked any harder for the pic.

Very nice - these are such cool snakes!

I saw a big one (6'+) near Alice over the weekend too. The turkeys that saw him were absolutely not a fan and rushed over to peck him until he/she slithered off the sendero in a flash. One of the reasons I haven't caught one… I'm too old and slow I guess.

I always found it interesting how Crowned Night Herons would nest near my old house in Katy that was probably half a mile from the nearest water source. I still seem the sometimes lingering underneath some oak trees and figure it's one of the parents near a nest (when in spring time)
