On average real costs run about 20% of charges, so $90k should translate to about $18k.

While average reimbursement will be about 102-104% of cost, it varies a lot by payer type. Commercial insurance would typically pay a little over 2X cost, so in this case 35-40k. Remember the hospital is offsetting 10-20% of the population who don't pay anything (uninsured, no assets, walk in through the ER), and folks on government plans where the price is set between 60-80% of cost.

Yes, a little over half of what you and your employer pay in premium for your care is really just a federal tax under a different name.

Finally saw some good snakes up close today but had a lot of kids around me so was more focused on educating them. 5 water snakes with 3 being over 3ft. One took me a sec to ID since it was grey but turns out it was just covered in dust

We have a winner! I had to post it on Texas Snake ID because I always struggle with western rats (unless they're the usual green color), great plains rats, and the rare glossy snake.

That's one of my 3yo boy's terrarium/bug catching kits. Unfortunately, the boys were already asleep when I caught it, and I turned it out when I left for work before they were up. Otherwise, mama would've turned it loose with the shovel.
