My complaint isn't specific to offense or defense, it's in basic moments where we are trying to inbound the ball or set up the offense. He will try to maneuver into space to receive the ball, but he won't create enough room and the defender can easily cut out the action or get a steal. If we are relying on him to initiate the offense, his inability to receive the ball is a huge problem. He has to learn the art of being a point guard, not a shooting guard, if he is going to last.
Honestly, its mostly simple things such as subtly shoving the defender before he breaks to creates space or using his backside once he has received the ball to control his defender. Small little moments of physicality can help him control the ball, his defender and the pace of the game. I picked CP3 as an example, but FVV is also good at this (although nobody does it better than CP3 in my opinion).
Given his height he has no chance to make it as a normal shooting guard, so he is going to have to pick up point guard skills. Last night was encouraging because it showed he could at least hang on the court with really good players but he still had too many TOs, not enough assists and the team was -12 while he was on the court.

Biggest pushback is your use of +- to prove a point. It carries a little weight, but used in an individual game is almost meaningless. He played well the entire time he was on the court. He also got most of the SGA minutes and was guarding him almost the entire time. I'm good with him on both ends of the court. If they want him to develop the other nuances he needs playing time. He is t going to develop them sitting on the bench.
If you want to use +- then McVeigh needs to be a starter.
We had a midrange game last night for the first time this year. It was a breath of fresh air to watch him pull up and hit the open midranges shot. Something several rockets desperately needs to do more.

I try to never use +/- as a main argumentative point. If I use it, its always in combination with other numbers.
If I wanted to use +/- to validate my knee jerk reactions I probably would have cited Dante: +2 in 19 minutes. I thought he was waaaaayyyyyy better than Landale. Meaningful stats back it up: 9 boards and 2 blocks (4 fouls though).
I'd like to see him take the 3rd string center spot. Landale just doesn't do it for me. He plays hard, but he just doesn't seem coordinated/athletic enough to make a consistent impact. I'd rather give Dante his minutes to see if he can give us a spark. I thought he moved really well for a big kid.
Last night against the Thunder, Reed Sheppard of the @HoustonRockets became the first player in NBA history to record 25+ points, 5+ assists, 3+ made threes & 3+ stocks (steals + blocks) in his first career start. pic.twitter.com/GGthj5LP8Y

I feel this way (re: Sengun) about all of our players in some shape or form.

That could be any player on the team on any given night. They all have something: Jalens lack of focus, Tari throwing the ball away, Amen out of control, FVV chucking, Alpi missing bunnies, Dillon fouling, Jabari disappearing, Adams poor shooting, Tates lack of height....
Luckily they are athletic and play hard. That won't be good enough to win anything meaningful, but it's good enough for now.
I keep watching the Mavs fans and telling myself to enjoy what I got. It ain't perfect and I'm definitely going to be annoyed with them, but there is hope. At least we got hope.
Amen was really a boom or bust pick. Insane 99th percentile athleticism, but can't shoot and Ignite/Elite players have a pretty poor track record in the NBA - I don't think those teams helped develop players at all.Woods Ag said:AG@RICE said:

Amen (no pun intended) to all of this. The only one (young guys) I am completely sold on as a career starter (whether that ends up being super star, or just athletic defensive stopper on a championship team) is Amen. I'm happy with him just as he is but obviously the ceiling is so much higher. It's funny because I was the most worried about that draft pick.
The rest are still question marks
it helped us forget about 4 years, $18 million for Matt Maloney at the time.TREX01 said:
How could you ever forget. What an incredibly bad decision

But the way he has developed this year, he's going to be a top 5 defensive player for the next decade and if he develops a shot, he can be a top 5 NBA player. I don't think he is ever going to really be able to run the point full time, but you can slot him up at 2-4 and he can be a secondary ballhandler, rollman, cutter, and handle all the POA duties. Such a valuable player to have on the team.

Although the Rockets never got back to the finals, getting T-Mac for Steve, Cuttino, and Cato was one of the best I can't believe the other team fell for it trades in history.cupcakesprinkles said:Head Ninja In Charge said:The city made songs about it we were so mad.The Original Houston 1836 said:Someone remembers Kelvin Cato getting $42 million for a pre-season triple double I see.TREX01 said:
