Not on a 10 year contract. No way do I want a guy who it is rumored could take or leave the game under contract for that long.

After seeing our pathetic offense all of last year, I have a new appreciation for what it means to have multiple elite hitters in a lineup. I can't go through that again. It's not my money so I don't necessarily care how much it costs, although I would definitely prefer a shorter deal.

With an unlimited budget, sure, sign him, Polanco, Bregman, and Alonzo to long term deals and trade Paredes, Walker, and Smith for pitching. But since we don't have an unlimited budget, I would rather not tie so much of it up with a guy who is rumored to not really love playing the game and has missed significant time in two consecutive seasons.

With a healthy Yordan, Meyers, and Smith we have more pressing needs to fill than blowing a huge amount of our budget on one OF. I would love to have his hitting, but not at that price. We need a 2B and either need Walker to figure it out or we need another new 1B.

We have a lot of warm bodies but our offense was not good last year. We are gonna have to increase production somewhere.

Meyers and Smith are both big questing marks, still. If they can sit at the bottom of the order and hover around .700 OPS, fine. No reason to expect them to be anything else. Jake still hasn't proven if Click was right.

If he's at the 9 spot he doesn't need too much power. I'd take his last year at 8/9 spot all day.

There is a solution to that. But the MLBPA would never allow it.

Make contracts incentive based.
Make contracts non-guaranteed.

Then if Tucker (or any other player) wants to lollygag or milk an injury he pays a price and doesn't get rewarded for it.

There are lots of bats out there that can help us increase production that don't require us going head to head with the dodgers for the top free agent this offseason. If we get Tucker back, we probably overpaid for what we will get from him.

I think some of the best set of games we had were when Pena led off and Jake batted 2nd. A hitter at .300 can move a fast guy extra bases. It's stops the station to station inefficient crap we saw for much of the season.

I think this is our recipe for a good offense.

  • 1 Elite Player (155+ wRC+) - Yordan
  • 2 Borderline All Stars (125+) - Pena, Paredes
  • 4 Solid Above Avg Players (105-115) - Correa, Altuve, Walker, Diaz, Sanchez (4 of these)
  • 5 Avg to Slightly Below Players (85-100) - Meyers, Smith, Dubon, Urias, and someone from the group above
  • No one sub 85 wRC+ gets more than 200 PA
None of those categories for these guys are outlandish or improbable

  • Last year we had:
    • 0 Elite Players
    • 2 Borderline All Stars - Pena, Paredes (both with significant time hurt)
    • 3 Solid Players - Correa, Altuve, Alvarez (1 deadline piece, 1 hurt most of the year)
    • 2 Solid Players - Meyers, Caratni (again, 1 player injured a good amount)
    • 3-4 Avg to Below - Walker, Diaz, Smith (2/3 fell well below expectations, could include Dezenzo too)
    • 7 players with >100 PA who sucked: Dubon (almost 400 PA), Tremmell, Urias, Sanchez, Hummel, Chas, & Rodgers. About 1000 PA worth of *****
    The major risks to the "recipe"
    • Can Yordan stay healthy?
    • Can Pena repeat his 2025?
    • Can Altuve keep defying Father Time?
    • Will the guys who had career-worsts bounce back (Walker, Diaz, Sanchez)
    I don't think there is anything we can do this offseason to manage the risk of the first 2 bullet points. However, I do believe we can look at adding players to help the middle/bottom of the roster. Players like Bellinger (ew), Grisham, O'Hearn, Kepler, Castro, Polanco, Kim, etc could help with depth and push in the "solid above avg" category.
