Eastern Hognose. Common coloration for that area.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Friend sent me this from the west side of Houston and said it was a moccasin…for once it actually was.

Some from this weekend:

Eastern Tiger Salamander I uncovered with the skidsteer. My boys played with him for a while before I turned him loose after they went to bed.

And then ended the night with a very young copperhead in the driveway. Always a little concerning finding these where my 1 and 3 year old were playing all day, but it comes with the territory. He had a swift meeting with my boot.

Robertson County. They don't seem super common around here. First I've ever seen and had to get my ID confirmed on FB.

Google does say eastern Texas.

My deepest sympathies for being associated with east Texas.

Lmao. I grew up in Brown County, which I always called central Texas. The legitimate geographic center of Texas is about 15 miles from from the house I grew up in.

Now I own property with pine trees and tell people I'm from west Texas.

That is a significant find for east Texas. Would love to get more details if you can provide them.

Absolutely. What do you want to know? It was between Wheelock and Franklin. Found while grubbing out some yaupon, presumably it was underground. It was 6" long, I'd guess.

It looks like there are a few sightings around the area on inaturalist, but most are up towards Palestine.

Awesome, thanks. Do you have a tank or pond on your property nearby?

The nearest tank or place that holds water is about 450' away. Nothing very close to where this was uncovered.

I'd imagine that's where it came from and, if there are other adults in the immediate area, where they will commence their winter breeding. Would love to run a net through there in January and see what's going on.

So he will know where to put the speaker playing Kenny G and Luther Vandross on repeat.

That creature only responds to Barry White.

That copperhead is cute and was just saying hello! Send him elsewhere to go do baby snake things.

All nearby water is on my neighbors' land, unfortunately.
