We signed safety Jalen Mills today. Guessing it's insurance for CJ-CJ and Ward (forgot they still have him on the team right now).

Encouraged by the first drive for sure. Granted it was one drive, but it didn't look as laborious as last years offense. Hopefully we stay healthy and keep improving

Agree, it was the efficiency that stood out to me. I mean, first preseason game with mostly backups and they looked more efficient and executed better than most of the regular season games last year.

The Lions have been hit hard by injuries this year (as an Astros fan I have little sympathy).

https://www.prideofdetroit.com/nfl-open-threads-detroit-lions-community-questions-engagement-message-board-conversations/138880/discussion-are-the-detroit-lions-to-blame-for-their-injury-woes

Quote:

. . .
After a 2024 campaign marred by injuries up and down the roster, 2025 is not off to a better start. Defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike underwent season-ending shoulder surgery before the start of training camp. The Lions will be without young defensive backs Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and Dan Jackson for the 2025 campaign due to shoulder and leg injuries, respectively. Just days after the Lions' second preseason game, a trio of players landed on the injured reserve: offensive linemen Colby Sorsdal and Justin Herron, as well as tight end Kenny Yeboah.

Not even two weeks into August, the Lions are already looking at a depleted roster. Six players are out for the season, while players like Alim McNeill and Malcolm Rodriguez are likely to miss the start of the regular season. Sprinkle in question marks like Josh Paschal, Mekhi Wingo, and Miles Frazier, and the injury questions are stacking up.
. . .
When Sorsdal, Yeboah, and Herron were added to the injured reserve on Sunday, there were many immediate responses blaming aspects of the team in some way. Are the Lions playing too physically, especially in the preseason? Is the Lions' strength and conditioning team subpar for allowing all of these ailments to occur? Is general manager Brad Holmes to blame for acquiring injury-prone talent? Each of these points are worth discussing, sure, but blaming one as the cause of the Lions' injury woes is simply not fair nor realistic.

Sucks on the team level as people have been saying he would be a big contributor this year. Even worse on the human side after he worked back from last year's injury. Still remember how electric the stadium was in the playoffs against CLE when he scored

Damn, I feel so bad for the guy. To work that hard to come back and have a freak accident on the practice field.

That's really tough for BJ. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

But with that said this only creates more opportunity for Cade Stover. He showed flashes last season but I'm looking for him start eating into Dalton's reps.

I have a feeling TE is going to see an increased role in this offense.

OC Nick Caley is mic'd up. Really nice look at our new OC, I like how positive he is while pushing everyone.

Outside of a couple of haven't got your groove back plays, I'm really liking what I'm seeing from the starters. Chubb looks like he's almost an automatic 5 yards. Stroud off on a few passes but crisp overall. WRs look really really good. Oline looks good even though Fishers at RT. Playing the panthers so grain of salt. Defense is the defense and looks scary.

Does head coach or DC call our plays on defense?

If the D can avoid the big plays this year, they will be a top 5 if not top 3 D in the league.

Burke is calling them with I believe Demeco in his ear from time to time, but Burke is calling the plays.

I liked that we were giving CJ high percentage throws and gaining solid yardage on first down. Much easier to execute an offense when you aren't constantly in long distance situations.

Yes! It looked like 1st down plays were always all high percentage 5-8 yard type plays, so we rarely had 2nd or 3rd and long.

Agree 100%

They abused the Panthers starters while just rushing 4.

Seems like picks re-swap from the CJGJ trade. Essentially traded Kenyon and Metchie for CJGJ and Harrison Bryant

Traded him while his stock was high, and got something for him before dropping him.

Can't wait until the season starts to see if we have really do have some absolute steals on the o-line in Ersery and Ed Ingram at RG (who PFF currently has as the highest rated guard in the preseason).

But if Ersery really does have the LT locked down and Ingram finally lives up to 2nd round grade then that gives us a ton of flexibility going into the season. To the point that one of Titus Howard or Cam Robinson (whoever doesn't win RT) probably will end up a backup at the start of the season.

That would be incredible.
If our OL is even average it would be a huge boon.

No lie, that would completely change the outlook of the team.

On another note, pure rumor and nothing even definitive, but rumors of maybe the Texans looking at Brian Robinson who is going to be traded by the Redskins (wasn't even at the game last night). But I would be very interested in that if Mixon is going to miss significant time.

The hard part logistically is that he's frustrated about not having enough carries. Coming here would only further frustration

Potentially, but I also believe that if he came here and averages over 100 yards a game while Mixon is out, we would still give him a large amount of the carries when Mixon comes back.

But I would only do it if they think Mixon is going to be out for 6 or more games (which has started to pop up as a rumor)
